Thiru Parvatheeswarar Temple: Thiru Talichcheri / Koiyerpathu, Karikal.







The temple is about a kilometer from Karikal bus stand. This temple is One of 275Siva Devara Sthalam. Main Raja Gopuram of the temple is of five tiers and two Prakaram.



Main Deity is Arulmigu Parvtheeswarar and his consort known as Parvathy Ammai / Suyamvara Thapasvini. Lord Siva is facing west and Ambal is seen in separate sanctum facing south. Vinyakar in this temple is known as Sambandha Vinayakar.








Sthala vruksham is Vilvam and Vanni. Teertham here, known as Sakthi and Soorya teertham.






Other deities seen in the temple are Vinayakar, Valli Devanai samedha Subramanyar, Lingothbavar, Maha Lakshmi, Dakshina Moorthy, Natrajar, Durgai, Chandikeswarar, Bairavar, 63 Nayanmars,Sani Bagavan, Nalwar, Soorya and Chandra and Navagraham sanctums.



Importance:During the 3rd and 4th week sunrays falls on main deity when sun sets.


In Krutaha yugam the place was known as Brahma Vanam, in tretha Yugam it was known as Samee Vanam, Dwapara Yugam it was known as Ananda Vanam and in Kali Yugam the place is known as Mukthi Vanam.



Palgunan and Soorya worshiped Lord Siva, hence the “He” is known as Palgunan and “Bskara Lingam”. King Ambareesha was blessed with a child after his worship in this temple, hence Lord Siva is known as Raja Lingam.



Ambal worshiped Lord Siva as Kathyayani, daughter of Kathyayana muni. She was blessed and she married Siva and she is known as Suyamvara Thapasvini. Devotees worship for marriage and Ambal blesses them and fulfill their wishes.



Siva disguised like a hunter in this temple, known as kradha Moorthy and blesses devotees. Sambandhar had to argue about the Saiva religion with members of other religion, who were arguing Saivam as inferior. Sambandhar was able to prove the greatness of Saiva religion and changed them to this religion.



There was draught in Chola period once, king worshiped Lord Siva to help who are affected in his regime. Lord Siva was pleased with King’s worship. Lord Siva and Parvathy together Sow seeds in the field and helped them. They had bumper crop and were relieved of draught. Since Lord Siva himself sprayed seeds here the place came to be known as Thiru Telichery.



Thiru Gyana Sambandhar was passing through the village after his visit to Thiru Nallaru Temple. He did not notice the temple here. At this point Vinayakar of the temple called out to him to sing a song on Lord Siva. Sambandhar did not here Vinayakar’s voice, so Vinayakar shouted ten times by Sambandhar name to get his attention. Hence the place is known as Koirpatthu. (Patthu denotes ten in Tamil) Vinayakar of the temple is known as Koovi Azaitha Vinayakar. (Koovi denotes shout)

Thiru Navaneeteswarar temple: Sikkal, Nagpattinam.




The place Thiru Sikkal is about 5 kms from Nagapattinam. This temple is one of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam. The temple is a Maddak koil built by CoChengat Cholan.
This is one of 64 Sakthi Peetam.

Main Raja Gopuram is of seven tiers and there are two prakaram in the temple. The temple is a Maddak koil built by CoChengat Cholan.



Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Vennaipiran / Nvaneeteswarar and his consort known as Velnedug kanni ammai / Sakthayadatshi.
Teertham is Ksheera Pushkarani and Sthala Vruksham is Kuda Malligai.






As we enter inside and go round the prakarm, we come across Karthigai Vinayakar, Arulmigu Singara Velan, Maragadha Lingam, and Thirumal.







We climb few steps and enter into a mandapam known a Deva kottam. Here we see in separate sanctum Soma Skandar, Viswanadhar, and Arumugan.



Subramanyar was given Vel, to fight against Soorapaduman, by Goddess of this temple hence she is known as Velnedug kanni Ammai. In the month of Karthigai, a day before Sashti they celebrate this, in the urchavam, and at that time one can see the sweat on Lord Subramanian idol. (I have never been during urchavam time, so I have given the information as to what I heard.)



Sthala puranam says once during draught period Kamadenu ate non vegetarian food. Lord Siva cursed Kamadenu to become a tiger. Tiger requested Lord Siva to show him the way to get rid of the curse. Lord Siva asked Kamadenu to go to Mallikaranyam and Worship Lord Siva. Kamadenu reached the place and dug a pond and had bath. At this time milk starting pouring from its udder, and the water turned into Milk. Hence the pushkarani was known as parkulam. (Milk).



Butter formed from the milk in the pushkarani. Vasishta Muni came to the place on Lord Siva’s command and he made a Siva Lingam from the butter in the pushkarani and worshiped Lord Siva. Here Lord Siva is known as Vennai Nadhar (Butter). After the pooja he wanted to lift the Siva Lingam (Butter) from there, but he was not able to do so. Since there was a trouble in lifting the Siva Lingam, the place was known a Sikkal. (Sikkal means trouble in Tamil)



Importance of the temple is here Perumal has a separate sanctum and he is known as Kola Vamana Perumal. During Vamana Avatharam, Perumal worshiped Lord Siva of this place Sikkal and gained power.



Viswamithrar, Agasthiyar, Kathyayanar, Musukundha chakkravrthi, and Naradhar worshiped Lord Siva of this place.


There is a separate sanctum for Hanuman in this temple. Here in this temple Lord Siva, Murugan, Perumal and Hanuman are seen in same premises.

Thiru kannagkudi Temple : Nagapattinam.

Thiru kannagkudi Temple : Nagapattinam.



The place Thiru Kannagkudi is about 14 km from Thiruvaroore. The place is also known as Krishnaranyam. This temple is One of 108 Divya Desam Temples. The temple is one of Pancha Krishna Kshetram. Other four Kshetram are Thiru kannamangai, Thiru Kannapurm, Thiru koviloore, and Kapi sthalam.








The temple has a Raja Gopuram of five tiers. There Maha Mandapam Artha Mandapam and Main sanctum.









Main Deity is Sri Lokanadha Perumal in standing posture with his consort Sridevi and Bhoodevi Thayar. Urchavar in this temple known as Damodhara Narayanan with his left hand rested to his hip. There is a separate sanctum for Thayar known as Lokanayaki Thayar and urchava thayar known as Aravindha valli



Teertham is Sravana Pushkarani. There are about eight well inside the temple premises.
Sthala Vruksham is Magizha Maram.




Other deities seen in the temple as we go around the prakaram are Garudan, Ramar, Sri Manavala Ma Munigal, Udayavar, Azwar, Hanuman, Thirumangai Azwar and Madhura kavi Azwar.



Importnce in the temple is Garudazwar is seen with his hands folded, water does not spring in the well and there is a tamarind tree, which is known as Urangapuli. Sthala vruksham Mgizha maram is always green.



Stahla Puranam: Vasishta Muni made an idol of Krishna in butter and used to worship daily. Lord was pleased with his Bakthi, and Lord disguised as a small boy and took the idol in his hand and started running. Vasishta chased the small boy. Many other sages were meditating under the Magizha maram, by their intellectual power, were able to identify small boy as Lord Krishna, they tied Him with their Bakthi. Lord Krishna revealed himself to sages for their worship. Hence the place is known as Kannagkudi.



One day Thirumangai Azwar stopped here on his way to Thiruvarangam. He was going there to do some renovation work for the temple. He was carring a Golden idol of Buddha Vigraham with him. He wanted to sleep for some time and he kept the idol hidden to earth under tamarind tree. He requested the tree to keep awake when he is sleeping. Next day when he woke up he saw the tree awake and he blessed the tree as Uranga puliye. From that day onwards the leaf of the plant does not sleep.



Owner of the place came there to plough the place under the tamarind tree. Azwar said he cannot do so, and he claimed ownership. There was argument between the two and villagers started intruding. The original owner had the documents which he submitted before the villagers. Azwar asked one day time for him to get the documents.



After the case was over Azwar felt thirst and asked for water to a women who was drawing water from well. The lady thought the person tried to claim the land of their villager and he seems to be a trouble maker and she refused to give him water. Azwar got angry and he cursed, as water will not spring in the well hereafter. From that day water level in the well is deep.



Azwar was feeling hungry and he was praying to Lord of the temple under the Magizha Maram. Lord in disguise brought food for Azwar who was almost lost himself due to hunger. He ate the food and turned around to look for the person who has given meal for him. He did not find anyone around, Azwar thanked Lord for his meal and he blessed the Magizha Maram as Kaya Maram (to be always fresh).

Devapureeswarar Temple: Deyvoore, Thiruvaroore.



The place Deyvoore is about 5 kms from Keez Velore, which is about 13 kms from Thiruvarore and about 12 kms from Nagapattinam.







The Devoore temple has a Raja gopuram of three tiers and Five prakaram. The temple is One of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam. This is a Madakkoil built by CoChengat Cholan. This is one of Ashta Vinayakar Sthalam






Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Arulmigu Devapureeswarar / Deva Guru Nadhar and his consort known as Madhura Bashini / Theyn mozhiaal in a separate sanctum. Vinayakar is Valampuri Vinayakar and he is known a Brahma Varadhar.




Teertham is Deva Teertham which is in front of the temple. Varuna, gowthama, Mrutha, & Sanjeevini are other pushkarani for the temple.








Sthala vruksham is Kalvaazhy ( Plantain).
The sthala Vruksham is growing on stone which is something peculiar. There is no mud portion near the root. They do not water the plant.




As we go around the prakaram we see Vinyakar, Murugan, Gowthama Lingam, Aglaya Lingam, Indra Lingam, 63 Nayanmar, Maha Lakshmi, Durgai, Nava graham, Bairvar, Chandran, and Sooryan. On the first floor we see Somaskandar as Ammaiappar.
We see the sanctum of Athama Nadhar worshiped by Manikkavachakar.



Subrmanyar sanctum is in-between Lord Siva and Goddess sanctum, and is considered as Somaskandha Moorthy sthalam.


Importance: When Devas worshiped Lord Siva even the Wel Vazhy also worshiped and it was considered as Sthala Vruksham of the temple. Devas were given Mantra Upadesam. The place is known as Devanoore which has changed to Deyvoore.

Guru Bagawan worshiped Lord Siva here, so he is known a Deva Guru Nadhar.
So there is no Muyalagan seen under the legs of Deva Guru.


Indra Worshiped Lord Siva to get rid of his sin, for killing Vrudhasuran.


Here Duragi is seen with Sanku in a hand and MannMuzhu in another hand to prove Saiva and Vaishnava as equals.


Kubera worshiped Lord Siva here and gained his Sanga Nidhi and Paduma Nidhi Kalasam, which was grabbed by Ravana. He got back his position which he lost to Ravana after worshiping Devapureeswarar.


Sthala purana says by worshiping Lord Siva here one will get back their position and wealth which they have lost.

When there was a draught period of 12 years Gowtha Muni he installed a Siva Lingam in this temple and worshiped. He acquired wealth for his worship from Lord Siva which he utilized for draught relief.

Stone inscriptions of Jata Varma Sundara Pandiyan period is seen in the temple.

Thiru Bawa Oshadeeswarar Temple: Thiruthuraipoondy.



The place Thiruthurai poondy is about 30 kms from Thiruvarore.






The temple has a main Raja gopuram of five tiers and two prakaram. The temple is a very old temple. In Krutha yugam the place was full of Vilwa tree and the place was known as Vilwaranya kshetram.







Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known a Bawa Owshadeeswarr and his consort known as Brahan Nayaki.



Teertham is Mangala Teertham and sthala Vruksham known as Vilwam.
Other Deities seen in the temple as we go around the inner prakaram are teertha Vidanga Thyagarajar, Subramanyar, Gajalakshmi, Gaja Samhara Moorthy, Bairavar, Nalwar, Teertha Vidanga Vinayakar and Natarajar Sanctums.



Sthala Purana says Brahma worshiped lord Siva in this place and it is known as Brahma puri. Sages and Rishis installed Siva Lingam and dug Nine Pushkrani in this place and worshiped Lord Siva. The place is known a Nava Teertha Puram. Sthala Vruksham is Vilavam so it is called a " Thirutharu Poondy."



During Tretha yugam a Rakshashi by name Jalligai who is devotee of Lord Siva lived. When her husband died she prayed to Lord Siva and she sprinkled Amirtha teertham water of this temple. Her husband got his life and the place was known as Jalli Karanyam. Amirtha teertham / Mangala Teertham is seen in front of Ambal Sannidhi.




During Dwapara yugam Navagrah’s worshiped Lord Siva here to get rid of their unknown sins. So the place was known as Navagraha Puram. Musukundha Chakravarthy worshiped Lord Siva of this temple and he was blessed.



Importance is Lord Siva performed Chandra Choodamani ThiruThandavm here. There is a big deity of Natarajar which is made of five metals.

Keevalore Temple, keez velore, Thiruvarore.

Keevalore Temple: keez velore, Thiruvarore.



The place Keezh Velore is about 36 Kms from Thiruvarore to Nagapattinam route. The temple is One of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam. This is a Madakkoil built by Cochengat Cholan.







The temple has main Raja Gopuram of Seven tiers and two prakaram.







Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Kediliappar / Atshya Linga Swamy and his consort known as Vanamoolai Amman / Sundara Kujambikai.







Teertham for the temple is Agni, Brahma, Saravana Poigai, Soorya, Chandra and Kubera teertham. Sthala Vruksham is Badri and Elandhi.








As we go around we other Deities seen here are Bala Subramanyar, Agasthiyar, Viswanadhar, Maha Lakshmi, Kailasa Nadhar, Bragadeeswarar, Annamalai Nadhar, Jambukewarar, Kuberan and Devayindran sanctums. Kalyana Sundarar and Nardhana Ganesa is seen in Maha Mandapam








Importanceof the temple is Natrajar is seen standing with his left leg and his right one is lifted above with ten hands giving his blessings to Agastiya Muni.
Here Goddess sculpture is made of mortar, so there is no abishekam for Ambal.



Lord Murugan worshiped Lord Siva of this place to get rid of the dosham by killing Soorapaduman. He made a pushkarani by his Velayudaham. When he was worshiping Lord Siva he was disturbed by evil things so he prayed Goddess Parvathy to help him. Goddess Parvathy helped Lord Murugan, from all four directions and in the space as Anjuvattathu Amman.


An Asura by name Singathvajan was feeling thirsty, he was asking for water in a louder tone disturbing the Muni, who was meditating. Muni cursed him to become a donkey.

Agsthiyar was penancing at Vindhya parvatham. Here there was a king of the forest who was disturbing the people who visit to Agasthiyar place. Agasthiyar cursed him to become a donkey.


In their next birth the two donkeys were in a business man’s house. He used them to transport commodities. Once they came to this temple with their master and drank the water in the Brahma pushkarani, and they were able to look into their previous birth and started conversing amoung them. The master was afraid at the donkeys speaking like human beings and he left them. They went around the temple and heard a voice asking them to take bath, worship Lord Siva on Full moon day of Adi (July) for four days and drink the Water of Brahma Pushkarani. They will get back to normal human form.

Vedaranyeswarar: Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam.




The place Thirumarai kadu / Vedaranyam is about 45 Kms from Nagapattinam. This is One of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam. The temple is One of Saptha Vidanga Sthalam.







The main Raja Gopuram of Vedaranyam temple is of five tiers and two Prakaram.






As we enter through the main Raja gopuram we see a 16 pillar mandapam and the pushkarani is seen to our left.







As we cross the mandapam, we see small sanctum for Ganpathy.






After having darshan of Ganapthy, there is one more pillar mandapam to cross and enter in to the inner Gopuram of the temple





Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Vedaranyeswarar and his consort known as Veda Nayaki Amman / Veena Vadha Vidushani. The temple is One of 64 Sakthy Peetam known as Sundari Peetam. Thayagarajar here is known as Bhuvani Vidangar. The dance of Thyagesar here in this temple is known as Hamsa Natanam.





Sthala Vruksham is Vanni Maram and Punnai Maram.








Teertaham is Manikarnikai and Veda teertham.







The temple prakaram is very big and it was full of water.



Importance: Vedas worshiped Lord Siva here in this place. After their worship the temple main door was locked from inside. There was another door from the side which people were using to enter into the temple. Thiru Navukkarasar and Thiru Gyana Sambandhar reached this place on their visit to temples in the south. They were surprised to see the main door closed and came to know the reason. Sambandhar asked Navukkarasar, to sing on Lord Siva to open the door for devotees. Lord Siva was pleased by the Hymns, which he sung and the door opened on its own. Sambandhar was requested to sing to keep the door closed and opened here after. Sambandhar sang hymns on Lord Siva the temple main door closed on its own. From that day onwards the main door is used by devotees to enter in.



Goddess voice is melodious like Veena, hence she is known as Veena Vadha Vidushani.
So here we Saraswathy Devi without Veena and instead she is in the form of meditating with palm leaf in her hand.







Durgai in this temple is facing south and she is worshiped as Kaval Deivam.









Agasthiyar had darshan of Siva and Parvthy marriage in this place.



A rat climbed on the lamp, to drink the ghee in it. The light was becoming dim. The rat tried to taste the ghee, in this act the string which was in the lamp got disturbed, and it started glowing bright. By this act which happened without the knowledge of the rate, in his next birth it was Mavali Chakkravarthy.



This place Thirumarai kadu is birth place of Paranjyothy Adigal who is the composer of Thiru Vilayadal Puranam.(Siva Leela).



Others like Manu Maandata, Dasaradha, Rama, Mavali, and Pandvas worshiped Lord Siva of this temple and were blessed.



The ”Four Vedas” which worshiped Lord Siva here, left the place when the kali yugam started and they are worshipping Lord Siva in the form of trees and Vruksham. The place is called as “Vedaranyam.”

Agastheeswarar temple: Agathiyan Palli, Nagapattinam.







The place Agathiyan palli is about 48 Kms from Nagpattinam and about 3 Kms from Vedaranyam. This is One of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam The main Raja Gopuram is of three tiers.







Main Deity is swayambu Lingam known as Arulmigu Agatheeswarar and his consort known as Mangi Nayaki / Bagam piriyaal. Lord Siva is facing east and Ambal is facing towards west.






Agasthya Muni sanctum is seen next to Ambal sannidhi.













Sthala Vruksham is Atthi and Teertham known as Agni Pushkarani.






As we go around we see sanctum of Vinyakar,and Dakshina Moorthy, and Navagraham.



Importance of the temple is Yama, Worshiped in this place and attained Mukthi. The Navagraha’s are in a line facing towards same direction



Sthala Purana says Agasthiyar was asked to go towards Southern side during the marriage of Lord Siva and Parvathy to balance the earth. Agyasthiyar was blessed by Lord Siva to visualize the marriage ceremony of Lord Siva any time he thinks so.
Agathiyan Palli is one of the places where, Muni made a Siva Lingam and worshiped Lord Siva, Hence the main deity is known by his name as Agastheeswarar.

Kulasekara Pandian celebrated utsavam for Lord Siva, and he was cured of his ill health.


Stone inscriptions of Chola, Pandya, and Thirupuvana Chakkravarthy Veera Pandya Devar period are seen.

Thiru Kodi KuzhagarTemple, Kodikarai, Nagapattinam.

Thiru Kodi Kuzhagar: Kodikarai, Nagapattinam.


The place Kodikari is about nine kms from Vedaranyam. This is one 275 Siva Devara Sthalam. Renovation work is going on.








Main Deity: Swayambu Lingam known as Amirthakateswarar and his consort known as Anjanakshi Amman. Lord Subramanyar is seen with Amirtha Kalasam.










Sthala vruksham is Kura Maram and Sthala vruksham is Agni teertham (ocean) and well known as Amudha Kinaru.



Other deities seen in the temple are Brahma, Lingothbavar and Durgai as, Koshta Deivam and Ganapthy Lingam when we go around the prakaram.




Importance : When Devas and Asuras churned Thiruparkadal for Nectar, many things came out of Ocean and finally they got the Nectar. Vayu Bagavan was carrying the Nectar pot, Asuras created wind storm. Pot tilted and nectar fell down which formed as Siva Lingam and some Nectar was collected in a pot by Lord Subramanyar. Here we see Subramanyar with Amirta Klasam. Arunagirinadhar sang Thirupugazh on Lord Murugan of this temple. Navagra’s are in a line, facing same direction.Here Navagrahas are watching the marriage cermony of Lord Siva and Parvathy.


Sthala Purana says this place is near to Sri Lanka. Lord Sri Rama was looking out place to construct a bridge and reach Sri Lanka to rescue Sita. Sugreeva suggested this place for Rama, which leads to Srilanka from back side. Lord Rama chose Rameswaram, which leads to front entrance. Sri Ramar Padam is seen in the temple. Sri Rama worshiped Lord Siva of this place.

The place Kacchanam is about 15 kms from Thiruvaroore to Thiruthurai poondy. The temple is on the main road itself. This is One of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam.
This is a Madakkoil built by Cochengat Cholan. The main Raja Gopuram of the temple is of three tiers and two prakaram.



Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Arulmigu Kaichinna Nadhar and his consort known as Palvalai Nayaki.



Sthala Vruksham is known as Kongu Ilavam. Teertham is Indra Pushkarani / Vajra Teertham.



Other deities seen in the temple are Vinyakar, Subramanyar, Natrajar, Ardhanaareeswarar, and Maha Lakshmi sanctum. We see Durgi, Saraswathy and Jeshta Devi as koshta Devathy.




Importance : Here Saraswathy is seen first who represent Knowledge, Durgai next who represent Intelligence and next we see Jeshta Devi who represent Laziness and finally the sanctum for Lakshmi Devi who represents wealth. The order is to show just by having knowledge and intelligence, it is not enough, if hard work is not there you cannot gain wealth.




Indran, Agasthiyar, Thrunabindu Muni, Vidhuman and Mithrsakan worshiped Lord Siva of this temple and were blessed. Indra worshiped Lord Siva to get rid of his curse by Gowthama Muni. Agasthiyar got rid of Brahmahathy dosham by worshiping Lord Siva of this temple.

The place Thiru Vaimoore is about 3 kms from Thiru Kuvalai. This temple is One of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam, and One of Saptha Vidanga Sthalam. The main gopuram of the temple is of three tiers and single prakaram.







Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Arulmigu Vaimoore Nadhare and his consort known as Ksheeroba vasini / Palenum men mozhiaal Ammai. Sthala Vruksham is Pala Maram ( Jack fruit tree) and Teertham is Soorya teertham.



Importance : Niagara’s are facing towards same direction in a line. Here in this place Thyagrajar is known a Neela vidangar. The dance of Natarajar is known as “Kamala Natanam, and Simhasanam is Rathna Simhasanam”. Sooya worshiped Lord Siva here, and Sun light falls on Siva Lingam and Ambal, during 12 & 13day of Panguni.(third week of April). Tarakasuran harassed Brahma and Devas, so disguised as birds and worshiped Lord Siva in this place. They were blessed By Lord Siva.







Other deities seen in the temple are Vinayakar, Murugan, Thyagarajar, Thirumarai Kaadar, Natarajar and Nalvar sanctum.

Brahma pureeswarar / Kolilinadhar Temple: Thiru kuvalai.



The place Thiru kuvalai is about 19 kms from Thiruvarore to Ettukudi, This place is about 13 kms from Thiruthurai poondy to Ettukudi (via) Kacchanam.







The temple is One of Siva Devara Sthalam and One of Saptha Vidanga Sthalam known as Avani Vidangar. The main Raja Gopuram of the temple is of five tiers, and two prakaram.



Main Deity of the temple is Swayambu Lingam of white sand known as Brahma pureeswara and his consort known as Vandamar Poongkuzhal ammai / Brahma kujalambikai in separate sanctum. Siva lingam is seen with kavacham.


Vinayakar is known a Thyaga vinayakar. There is Siva Lingam seen in-betwen Lord Siva sanctum and Amman sanctum which was worshiped by Agasthiyar. Here we se Navagraham in a straight line.







Sthala vruksham is Totha Vruksham.






Teerthaam is Brahma Pushkarani.



Purana says Brahma worshiped Lord Siva and made a pushkarani which is known as Brahma teertham. Once Brahma lie, told Lord Siva that he has seen the Thirumudi (head) of Lord Siva. So he was cursed, and was unable to perform the creation work assigned to him. Due to this confusion even the Graha’s were not in a position to function properly. To set right everything Brahma dug a pushkarani and made a Siva Lingam. He worshiped Siva Lingam here and hence Lord Siva is known as Brahma pureeswaar.


Importance of the temple is the place is one of Saptha Vidanga Sthalam known as Avani Vidangar. Beema worshiped Lord Siva of Thiru kuvalai to get rid of his Brahmahathi Dosham. Sundarar worshiped and sang hymns on Lord Siva, for manual power, to get his paddy (which was like a mountain) transported to Paravayar palace at Thiruvaroore.




Brahma, Agathiyar, Pancha Pandvas, Musukunda Chakkravarhy, and Navgraha’s worshiped Brahma pureewarar of this temple.


Thiru Gyana Sambandhar, Thiru Navukkarasar, and Sambandhar sang Hymns on Lord Siva. Stone inscriptions of Chola and period are found.

Ponvaittha Nadhar Temple of Chitraymam, Thiruvarore.

Chittraimoore temple: Thiruvarore District.



The place Thiru Chitraymam is about 14 kms north east of Thiruthurai poondy. This is one of 275 Siva Devara sthalam.The temple has a Raja Gopuram of three tiers. The temple has four prakarm.








Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Arulmigu Ponnvaittha Nadheswarar and his consort known as Akilanda Nayaki Amman. Vinyakar here is worshiped as Atthi mara vinayakar.







Teertham is known as Swarna Teertham. Sthala Vruksham is Atthi maram (Fig tree). The vruksham is very old.



Importance of the temple is Agasthyar, Devendran, Nagarajan, and Brahama worshiped Lord Siva of this temple. Once upon a time Brahma Rishi used to worship Lord Siva during late night pooja time. This was a regular feature for him. One day he was late and the temple doors were closed when he came to perform pooja. He changed himself s a honey bee and worshiped Lord Siva that day. Other Rishi's who were with him also did the same thing. Honeycomb is seen in the mandapam and pooja is performed for this everyday.



History: Everyday milk used to be supplied to Mutharasa puram, kings palace. They have to cross this village Chitraymam, to reach Mutharasapuram. The milk pot used to fall down and the milk spilled out in the same place regularly. When the king came to know about it he asked workers to dig at that place and they found a Siva Lingam with a cut due to digging. He installed the Siva Lingam in the village Chitraymam.



Purana says there lived Sankaran, by name who is a devotee of Lord Siva with his wife. They were newly married couple. Sankaran had to leave the village on business trip. She used to visit the temple and used to clean and make garland for deity. Lord Siva was pleased with her service and devotion. Lord used to keep a coin for her. She used to take the coin and survive with that money. Sankaran wife conceived. When Villagers came to know about it they suspected her and she was isolated in the village. She stayed in the temple and continued her worship. She prayed to Lord Siva to help her, Goddess helped her for safe delivery of the child.



One day Sankaran returned to village, all the members of the village told him about the happenings, he felt bad. He met his wife and asked her as to what happened in his absence. She said Lord Siva is witness for her innocence.


Sankaran said if that is true, the temple door should open on its own, the midnight pooja should happen accordingly without the help of anyone, Sthala vruksham should change its place from back of the temple to front side and Bali peetam should move in front of Nandi. Sankaran’s wife prayed, Lord Siva to help her and establish her innocence to everyone. Next moment the conditions were fulfilled, in front of the villagers who were present in the place. They praised her, for her faith and devotion on Lord Siva.

Valivalam temple, of Nagapattinam District :








This is one of 275 Siva Devra sthalam. The place vlivalam is about sixteen kms to South east of Thiruvarore.







The temple is a Madak koil built by Cochengat Cholan. In this temple Vinayakar is Valampuri Vinayakar.




Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Arulmigu Manathunai Nadhar / Edaya kamala Nadhar and his consort known as Madyaayadatshi / Maazhiyun Kanni Ammai.









Sthala vruksham is Punnai.










Teertham known as Chakkra Teertham and Karanar gangai in this temple.




Importance is Karikuruvi (black sparrow), Sooryan, and Karana muni worshiped Lord Siva here and were blessed by him.




Purana says due to karma done in his past life, a person took birth of Karikuruvi (black sparrow). Once it got hurt by a strong big bird chasing it. The sparrow took shelter on a tree where a sage was preaching, to his disciples about the place Madurai. He said Madurai city is best one, Potramari Pushkarani in Mdurai temple is good one and Main deity Chokka Nadhar of Temple is the best among all.




The sparrow was hearing to Siva yogi’s preaching to his disciples. He said Lord Somasundarar is generous in blessing the devotees who worship Him. Sparrow got wisdom hearing the words of saga and it came to know about the previous birth.




The sparrow flew to Madurai city and had a dip in the pushkarani and worshiped Lord Siva in the sanctum. This was going on for few days. Finally one day Lord Siva was pleased and preached Mruthunjaya Mantra to the sparrow. The sparrow was enlightened by the Upadesam. Sparrow requested Lord Siva to bless him with enough strength to withstand attack of other birds. Lord Siva blessed so and the sparrow was known as Valiaan. The Karikuruvi lineage was blessed with strength. One of the sparrow (Valian) belonging to the family worshiped Lord Siva of this temple and the place came to be known as “Valivalam”



Thiru Navukkarasar, Thiru Gyana Sambandhar and Sundarar sang Hymns on lord Siva of this temple. Arunagiri Nadhar sang thirupugazh on Lord Murugan here.Stone inscriptions of 2nd Kulothungan, 3rd Rajendran, and Sundra pandiyan period is seen in the temple.

Thiru Naduthurai Nadhar, Koil Kannapoore :



The place Thiru Kandrapoore is about 13 kms from Thiruvarore. This is one 275 Siva Devara sthalam.







The temple has Raja gopuram. The temple has two prakaram.






Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Naduthari Nadhar and his consort known as Madhumai Nayaki / Sri Valli Nayaki. There is a cut on top of Siva Lingam.








Teertham is Siva Ganga and sthala Vruksham is Kalpanai.







Other Deities seen in the temple as we go round the prakaram are Vinayakar, Sunderaswarar, Six Vinayakar, Murugan, Durgai, Lingothbavar, and Krpaga Nadhar sanctum.






As we enter in we see Nandi to Nandi Mandapam



The Siva Lingam came out from the bundle of rope, which is used to tie the calf to pole. So he is known as “Naduthari Nadhar.”



Purana says a saiva girl named Kamalavalli was married to Vainava boy. The girl was devotee of Lord Siva and she continued doing pooja in cow shed after her marriage in her in- laws house secretly. She used to worship the bundle of rope as Siva Lingam. One day her husband came to know about this. He hit the rope bundle with his axe, from which Lord Siva came out with a cut, and blood oozing out of it. Kamalavalli and her husband were taken to kailasam.



Idumban worshiped Lord Siva of this place and he was blessed by Lord Siva. Thiru Navukkarasar sang Hymns on Lord Siva of this temple. Arunagirinadhar sang Thirupugazh on Lord Murugan.
