Importance is Karikuruvi (black sparrow), Sooryan, and Karana muni worshiped Lord Siva here and were blessed by him.
Purana says due to karma done in his past life, a person took birth of Karikuruvi (black sparrow). Once it got hurt by a strong big bird chasing it. The sparrow took shelter on a tree where a sage was preaching, to his disciples about the place Madurai. He said Madurai city is best one, Potramari Pushkarani in Mdurai temple is good one and Main deity Chokka Nadhar of Temple is the best among all.
The sparrow was hearing to Siva yogi’s preaching to his disciples. He said Lord Somasundarar is generous in blessing the devotees who worship Him. Sparrow got wisdom hearing the words of saga and it came to know about the previous birth.
The sparrow flew to Madurai city and had a dip in the pushkarani and worshiped Lord Siva in the sanctum. This was going on for few days. Finally one day Lord Siva was pleased and preached Mruthunjaya Mantra to the sparrow. The sparrow was enlightened by the Upadesam. Sparrow requested Lord Siva to bless him with enough strength to withstand attack of other birds. Lord Siva blessed so and the sparrow was known as Valiaan. The Karikuruvi lineage was blessed with strength. One of the sparrow (Valian) belonging to the family worshiped Lord Siva of this temple and the place came to be known as “Valivalam”

We see Chandra Shekarar, Rishabarudr, Bairavar and Durgai with a peacock in her hand. They have kept a board which says any wish presented in front of Durgai will be reported to Lord Siva and it is fulfilled. It says parrot is the media of transporting our prayers at Durgai, to Lord Siva.
Lalitha parameswari is seen in different sanctum. The sanctum is so peaceful and we loose ourselves in front of Lalitha Devi. This is the sanctum were Lalitha sahasranam was recited first. They say everyday they were a new anklet (Golusu) for Ambal here. They have written Lalitha sahasranam to wall in side the sanctum.

- Thiru Veezhimizhalai: This is one of 275 Siva Devara Sthalam.

Importance: Lord Siva married Kathyaya muni’s daughter Umadevi and he is seen in bridal form in this temple. We can see Kalyana sundarar embracing umadevi when we go around the temple. When you observe the sculpture from one end it looks as though uma Devi is angry with Lord Siva and from other angle you notice a smile on her face. Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Siva in this place and obtained Chakkrayudhm. Thiru Gyana Sambandhar, and Thiru Navukkarasar worshipped Lord Siva here and each obtained gold coin which they used for feeding their disciples. Swethu kethu worshipped and he was relieved of his fear of Yama.
As we enter inside the temple after worshipping dwajasthambam and Nandi we enter into a nandi mandapam which is in the shape of Bat and this is seen like this only in this place. The mandapam is known as Vowwall (bat) mandapam.
The main sanctum door is not too wide. We see Swayambu Lingam Thiru veezhi nadhar and at the back of the Lingam we see a big sculpture of Siva and Umadevi. This is visible only when Aarthy is given. They say it is the marriage form of Lord Siva and Umadevi. The sculptures of Kalyana Sundarar and Umadevi are famous. Lord Vishnu worshipped Siva by offering his eyes which is in the form of Lotus at the feet of Kalyana sundarar.
Thiru Gyana sambandhar and Thiru Navukkarasar sang hymns on Lord Siva of this place.
Arunagirinadhar sang Thirupugazh on Lord Murugan here.
By worshipping and garlanding Lord Siva and Umadevi, all hurdles for the delay in marriage get cleared.
